Stuart says government let down people over drink

Stuart has uncovered figures that show some of the true side effects of Labour's recession.

The last statistics available for 2008/09 released from the North West Public Health Observatory* show that people admitted to hospital from alcohol related injuries in Ellesmere Port and Neston has increased by 60% in just five years.

"This 60% increase is shocking and shows the real effects of this recession with people turning to drink.  This government has acted recklessly and inconsistently by on the one hand putting increased pressures and additional burdens on responsible Public House Landlords yet on the other liberalises the sale of alcohol in supermarkets and off licences by allowing them to sell drink at below cost price."

Stuart also pointed out that the alcohol death rate for men has increased from 33.1 per 100,000 head of population in 2003 to 49.6 in 2007.

"This is a serious failure by the Labour government to the people it professes to serve.  If ever there was an example of broken Britain and the governments failure to govern fairly then this must be it."

These are some alcohol-related stats from the North West Public Health Observatory (see below).

The number of people admitted to hospital due to alcohol-related harm in Ellesmere and Port and Neston is up by more than 60% over five years.
Admissions of people with diseases or injuries attributed to alcohol climbed from 1,193 to 1,952 between 2003/04 and 2008/09.
This represents a 64% increase, and figures still appear to be climbing.
And the rate of deaths per 100,000 people specifically attributable to alcohol has risen dramatically among males.
For men, it rose from 33.1 in 2003 to 49.6 in 2007, while the female figure has also seen an increase from 12.1 to 15.3 over the same period.
In 2006/07 there were around 800,000 alcohol-related admissions in England – up 9% in a year.
